CALANGUTE: The Candolim beach, which is mostly frequented by foreign tourists, is posing a threat to lives of tourists due to non-functioning of high mast light.
According to sources, the high mast light has not been functioning for over 6 months now and with the beginning of tourist season it could add as advantage to mischief mongers.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said: “I am seized of the matter and have taken up the issue with the Tourism Department. However, what I got from the Tourism Department was a letter directing the executive engineer, PWD, Tonca, to prepare an estimate for new high mast light at Candolim beach.”
“I do not want such paper work, but ground work. I had in fact brought it to the notice of DoT officials four months back, but they took no initiative over the issue and today Candolim beach is in total darkness. How will the police keep a track on miscreants indulging in illegal activities on the beach? Is the beach safe for tourists at night in absence of lights,” asked Lobo.
“The officials of Tourism Department should have taken some sort of initiative to have functioning lights on the beach. The lights have not stopped functioning overnight and everybody is aware of the sorry state of affairs on the Candolim beach,” he added.
