PERNEM: The iconic chapel situated on the hillock at Chritianwada, along the Tamboxem-Mopa NH 66, is now faces the threat of collapse due to the ongoing road widening work in the area. The project, aimed at expanding NH 66, involves cutting through hills, inadvertently jeopardizing the structural stability of the chapel.
The Christian community residing in the vicinity has raised concerns over the potential dangers posed by the road widening work. They have taken their appeal to the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at the Colvale office, alerting them to the precarious situation.

Local resident John Fernandes warned that if the chapel were to collapse, the government and the relevant departments will have to bear full responsibility.
“The chapel has stood for decades, pre-dating the existence of the national highway. Initially, the road was small and gradually widened over time. However, with the current extensive scale of the national highways project, the chapel’s safety is now at risk. We have pleaded with the government to address our concerns, but our appeals have gone unheard,” expressed Fernandes, emphasizing the community’s frustration.
The chapel holds historical and cultural significance and has served as a place of worship for generations. As the road widening project progresses, urgent attention is needed to ensure the preservation and protection of this cherished heritage site.
