PORVORIM: The Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution congratulating Draupadi Murmu on being elected as the 15th President of India.
BJP MLA Krishna Daji Salkar moved the resolution in the House. The Opposition MLAs also supported the resolution.

Speaking on the resolution, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant thanked the Opposition for their three valuable votes in favour of Draupadi Murmu, who was the NDA candidate.
“The BJP and its allies have 25 MLAs but Murmu polled 28 votes from Goa. I thank the Opposition three MLAs who voted for Murmu,” he said.
Murmu scripted history on July 21, by becoming India’s first tribal President, defeating united opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.
Sawant said that Murmu won by an overwhelming margin against Sinha after receiving over 64 per cent valid votes.
The Chief Minister said that the BJP is the only party that gives opportunity and platform to its cadres to be elected to the highest posts of the country. Sawant said due to this policy of the BJP, he himself went on to become the Chief Minister of the State from being a common worker of the party.
Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar said it was a matter of pride that a tribal woman has been elected to this highest position.
“This is possible only when the leadership of the country is all-inclusive,” he added.
Tawadkar said that Murmu’s elevation will give a big boost to backward communities like ST, SC and OBC.
“It’s a proud movement for the people of India and more particularly for tribal community,” he said.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that the party is looking forward to Murmu’s guidance and is confident that she will play an important role in maintaining the democracy and secularism of the nation.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said that India has set a new precedent by electing the first tribal leader as President of India.
“I am confident that she will make India proud,” he said.
