‘India is our friend’ Iran envoy signals safe maritime route

Amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf and growing concerns over maritime security, Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, indicated that India could receive safe passage through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to reporters, the envoy suggested that developments ensuring India’s access through the crucial global shipping corridor could emerge soon. The statement comes at a time when several countries are closely monitoring the situation in the Gulf due to security risks affecting international shipping and energy supplies.

When asked whether India would be granted safe passage through the narrow waterway, which handles a large share of the world’s oil shipments, Fathali struck a reassuring tone. “Yes, because India is our friend. You will see it within two or three hours,” he said.

The remarks signal Tehran’s willingness to maintain stable maritime cooperation with India despite the tense regional environment. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most vital trade routes, with millions of barrels of crude oil and other goods passing through it daily.

For India, which imports a significant portion of its energy through the route, any assurance of safe passage is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted trade and energy security. Diplomatic signals such as these highlight the importance of strong bilateral ties in safeguarding maritime interests.
