MARGAO: Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress along with Nuvem Block Mahila Congress sold around 300 coconuts within five minutes at the Nuvem panchayat market.
The coconuts were sold at subsidised rates and people flocked to purchase them.
While, the big coconuts were sold for Rs 10, the smaller ones were sold for Rs 5. The coconuts were sold within minutes, as some purchased five to ten coconuts, mostly by people who were selling other items in the market.
Mahila Congress President Pratima Coutinho said they have held similar sale at subsidised rates in other places too like Panjim, Mapusa, Assonora and Siolim and the response has been very good.
“While BJP women had taken to the streets over the high prices of onions, are they not affected by the rising price of coconut? Why are they silent now?” she asked, wondering whether they were being supplied coconuts by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
She argued that coconut is a staple item in Goan cuisine as it is used for curry and sweet dishes and lamented that Vijai Sardesai, despite being an agriculturist has not been able to find a solution to the escalating price of coconut.
“Coconut is required for curry, vegetables and even sweets and women have to spend Rs 100 per day to purchase the coconuts required to cook at home and this is truly burdensome,” said Nuvem Mahila Congress President Lourdina Miranda.
She revealed that member contributed the coconuts from their plantations so that the organization can carry out this programme.
