MARGAO: Farmers from Arlem and Manora in Raia are facing significant challenges due to the continuous dumping of garbage and sewage in their fields, which they fear will severely impact their vegetable cultivation.

These farmers, who rely on their crops for livelihood, are now demanding an immediate and permanent solution to this ongoing environmental issue.
According to local residents and farmers, raw sewage is being discharged into a small nullah, which flows into their fields, endangering their crops.
A passing nullah, which overflows from manholes connected to the sewage pipeline running from Arlem Junction towards Danvoddem in Fatorda, has been identified as a major source of contamination.
Expressing his frustration, Menino Quadros, a resident, said, “Farmers are preparing to grow vegetables. Now, sewage water released into the nullah flows into their fields. We’ve also noticed that fish in the area have been affected. If this continues, it will harm both the farmers and the environment.”
Judas Quadros, a farmer from Manora-Raia and a local panch, voiced his concern and pointed out that the problem has resurfaced.
“Many farmers are preparing to start their farming activities, and the sewage water flowing through the nullah will certainly hinder their efforts. Farming is the livelihood of many, and this problem must be addressed,” he said.
In response to the complaints, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco assured the farmers and locals that he would personally visit the site and take immediate action.
“I will ensure that this issue is resolved so that farmers and the local community are not adversely affected by the ongoing sewage discharge,” he assured.
The farmers and residents are hopeful that prompt action will be taken to safeguard both the environment and the livelihood of those dependent on agriculture in the region.
