MARGAO: Expressing anger over the failure of the authorities to initiate action against sand extraction along the stretch of the Zuari River in the village, Chandor sarpanch Chandor Edward D’Silva and the villagers have yet again demanded that the illegal activity be stopped once and for all.
D’Silva said, “The situation is very dangerous in the village due to sand extraction. The blame comes on the sarpanch for this activity while everyone from the top to down in the hierarchy has their hands dirty in the illegal business.”
He informed that these activities are taking place in the village for the last three to four years.
The locals claimed that they have made several complaints to the authorities. Several properties are getting destroyed due to the illegal sand extraction. Complaints to mamlatdar, Captain of Ports and district collector have gone in vain.
“The Captain of Ports some time ago during a raid had seized the boats used for sand extraction. However, the same people started extracting sand four days after the action,” claimed Joe Fernandes Coutinho, a senior citizen.
