CALANGUTE: In an incident that shocked the villages of Candolim and Calangute, a man allegedly killed his two minor children while they were asleep and grievously injured his wife, at their house in Candolim on Saturday. The man, Philip Fernandes (43), later went to Calangute police station and narrated the incident to police. While he has been detained, his spouse is recovering at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
According to Calangute Police, Philip walked into police station and narrated the incident to them. Initially the police did not believe him, but an officer later accompanied Phillip to the house, where he found the bodies of the children – a girl, Katrina and a boy, Elijaz. The spouse Svetlana was bleeding after allegedly being hit by Philip with a rod in a fit of anger; she was rushed to GMC.
Philip informed the police that he had a vision of someone wanting to kill his kids, so he held them tightly, which could have led to their death. Incidentally, it is learnt that he was on medication for mental disorder.
Philip’s brother and mother visited his house in the morning and were at a loss of words over the incident.
Calangute Police are unwilling to speak about the incident but DySP Nelson Albuquerque said the wife is the key witness in the case and the police will have to wait for her say. He, SP Umesh Gaonkar and PI Tushar Vernekar have taken stock of the situation and carried out the formalities.
The news of the double-murder rocked the villages of Calangute and Candolim, with people keen to know what led to the gruesome murder of two kids. The neighbours were also taken aback.
