PORVORIM: Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza stated that the ground floor of the new Mapusa fish market complex, which can accommodate around 240 fish vendors, will be ready before the onset of monsoon.
Speaking to Herald, D’Souza said the fisherwomen who are presently operating from the temporary shed will be shifted to the new market.
D’Souza further said he visited the new fish market complex on Monday and had discussions with the contractor about the progress of the work.
The construction work of the new fish market, the estimated cost of which is Rs 7.7 crore was started in December 2010 and the work was expected to be completed by June 21, 2012 as per the agreement.
“The work of the ground floor is almost completed. Some drainage and electrical work is pending. The contractor attributed the delay in completion of the market complex to non-availability of sand and construction material,” informed D’Souza.
“I have impressed upon the contractor the urgency and directed him to complete the ground floor by May 30,” he said.

“The contractor has assured to hand over the ground floor to Mapusa Municipal Council before monsoon,” said D’Souza.
