A 46-year-old woman from Cuncoliem, Mardol, passed away at the Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, on Sunday, hours after attempting to end her life by jumping from the new Khandepar Bridge. The incident occurred around 10 am while the woman was travelling to her parents’ residence in Usgao with her son on a mo torcycle. Upon reaching the bridge, she reportedly asked her son to stop the vehicle, dismounted, and suddenly leaped over the railing into the river below. Witnesses and police offi cials noted that because the tide was low and the water was only knee-deep at the time, the woman struck the rocky riverbed. The impact resulted in a fractured leg and multiple severe internal injuries. Passersby immedi ately alerted the authorities, and a police team rescued her from the riverbank in critical condition. Despite being rushed to the GMC for treatment, she succumbed to her injuries later in the day. The tragic incident has re ignited a heated debate over bridge safety in Ponda talu ka. Locals and activists have demanded the installation of steel safety nets on the railings of all major bridges in the area to act as a deter rent. Residents pointed to the success of the Borim Bridge safety measures as a prec edent. Following a series of similar suicide attempts at Borim, the government in stalled high steel mesh fenc ing along the railings, which significantly reduced such incidents. The police have registered the case and are investigat ing the circumstances that led the woman to take the extreme step.
