Margao civic body gets green signal to replace New Market’s old, damaged shed

MARGAO: After years of delay, the Margao Municipal Council has finally received approval from the Directorate of Municipal Administration to construct a shed on the New Market building, a project long overdue. The construction of the shed, estimated to cost around 36 lakh, will be funded by the 14th Finance Commission. However, due to the ongoing Lok Sabha election Code of Conduct, the civic body awaits approval from the Election Commission to proceed with the tendering process.

An inspection of the New Market building revealed the urgent need for protective coverings to shield it from monsoon damage. Despite years of neglect, traders have persistently voiced concerns over the leaks and lack of protection during the rains.

With the budget prepared and plans in place, the civic body aims to complete the construction before the onset of the monsoon, providing improved facilities for traders, tourists, and visitors. Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar opined that the Election Commission should prioritise the tendering of the work and give approval for repairs, considering the safety of visitors.
