Traffic in Margao is a well documented issue in the town as the situation worsens day by day. Parents of students of various schools however, took up the responsibility of attempting to change the situation. On Tuesday, at least 25 parents, teachers, Principals and PTA members from various schools in the vicinity held a meeting with the Deputy Superintendent and Police Inspector for Traffic in Margao.
It was jointly decided at the meeting to shut down the road opposite the police station, the road leading towards Loyola School and the right turn towards the city bus stand during the opening and closing hours of school. Additionally, these roads would have to be continuously monitored by the police. The parents will meet with police personnel again on Saturday to review the situation.
The police have taken the decision to shut down traffic on the roads in front of Fatima Convent School and Loyola school to cut down on traffic related issues. The PTA has also instructed parent to maintain discipline during the peak hours of school.
“The District Magistrate’s order is aimed at decongestion of Margao roads. It will be implemented here on and schools have been urged to allow parents to use the space in front of their premises for a short while during drop and pick up hours,” said traffic Police Inspector, Pramod Shirvaikar.
“We will take the responsibility of maintaining discipline and will urge schools to allow parents to use the land within their premises,” Dixon Vaz added. The road starting at Margao Residency, right up to the police station is virtually unusable due to traffic during peak hours. Parents coming to drop their children to school were being fined for parking by the side of the road. This prompted some of the aggrieved parents to go ahead and meet the the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Traffic, demanding an answer.
