PONDA: Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar along with Ponda Municipal councillors on Tuesday convened a meeting with various government officials to streamline traffic in the city.
“This is the first step towards improvisation of traffic management in the city. Some suggestions were made at the joint meeting, which will be implemented soon,” informed Mamledar.
During the meeting, a suggestion was made to introduce pay-parking system in the city but no decision was taken in this regard. According to information, the reason to introduce pay parking at specific locations was to deter people from using parking lots throughout the day.
“There was a suggestion to introduce pay parking as many employees park their vehicles in the city throughout the day. Pay parking will ease the problem, but no decision has been taken to implement pay parking in the city,” informed Mamledar.
Measures like no parking zones near Almeida High School, no hawker zone at Upper Bazzar-Ponda, installation of road sign boards, streamlining parking and various other measures are decided to be undertaken during the meeting.
“During peak hours, there is traffic congestion near Almeida High School. Hence, we have decided to make the road along the school a non-parking zone on trial basis. Even a right turn opposite the school will not be allowed during peak hours in view of traffic congestion,” added Mamledar.
“From Wednesday, there will be an awareness drive so that hawkers do not utilise footpaths and action will be taken from next Monday. Initially, the drive will be conducted in Upper Bazzar area, as most of the time traffic congestion is reported there. A decision has been taken to make the area from Borkar petrol pump to Vithoba temple, a no hawker zone,” informed Mamledar.
Mamledar also informed that PMC already decided to impound stray cattle and it will be sent to the government farm at Kale.
Councillors, Ponda DySP Dinraj Govenkar, DySP (Traffic) Virnodkar, PI CL Patil, Traffic PI Nilesh Dhaigodkar, Assistant Director of Transport Prahlad Dessai, RTO Vishant Usgaonkar were among those present for the meeting.
