PANJIM, MARCH 25
Deputy Speaker of Goa Assembly Mauvin Godinho and BJP’s MLA from Canacona Vijay Pai Khot today demanded that the case involving police links with drug mafia should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
“There is a Supreme Court ruling that the cases involving top police officers cannot be handled by the same agency and have to be handed over to the CBI or any other agency,” Khot said during the discussion on motion of thanks to Governor’s address to the House today.
Khot said here in this case Police Inspector Ashish Shirodkar, head constable Hussain Sheikh and four other constable Saish Pokle, Sandip Parab, Ramchandra Kankonkar and Sanjay Parab are involved.
“How can the Crime Branch investigate their own officers?” he asked adding, “I am sure if the case is investigated by the Central agency not only five names of around 50 policemen would be out.”
Cortalim MLA Mauvin Godinho said that all those involved in the drugs mafia should be punished. “Put your house in order”.
Blasting the police for their involvement with drug mafia, he wondered whether receiving hafta from matka was not enough for them.
Criticising the home ministry, Godinho said at one point, they said there were no drugs but now they had to admit that not only there were plenty of drugs available but even their own men-in-uniform were involved in the trade.
Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes was also critical of the police nexus with drug mafia. She wanted that the inquiry be investigated by an independent agency. How can cases against the police be inquired by the police themselves, she questinoed.
Fernandes also lambasted the government for the pro-casino approach.
