VASCO: Heated discussion over the Maimolem crematorium issue was witnessed during an ordinary Mormugao Municipal Council meeting at Janata Vachanayala, on Tuesday.

The Opposition councillors quizzed the Chairperson on the sudden change of the classification of plot acquired for cremation to agricultural zone in an Outline Development Plan of Mormugao and demanded to set up an inquiry with the Vigilance Department.
Kritesh Gaonkar, Krishna (Daji) Salkar, Murari Bandekar and other councillors gave a tough time to Chairperson Nandadeep Raut by shooting several questions at him about the sudden change in the classification of the plot acquired for the Hindu cremation at Maimollem to agricultural zone without having a proper procedure.
Kristesh and Murari asked why the Chairperson kept mum when he was present during the Mormugao Planning and Development Authority (MPDA) meeting and the point had come up for the discussion.
Chairperson Raut replied to them that initially he didn’t understand when the point of the municipal plot came in as it was referred to by the Chalata number.
Raut further mentioned that he will be submitting the necessary documents and the procedure will be followed up to keep it as a crematorium place as all the councillors have agreed to have crematorium at Maimollem area.
Councillor Krishna and others expressed the need to set up an inquiry into this matter to know who was involved in such malpractice of changing the classification of the plot, which has been already acquired for the purpose of building Hindu crematorium.
Maimollem Ward Councillor Fredrick Henrique said that the locals from Maimollem had objected for having a crematorium in their area stating that it is a low lying area and gets flooded in the rainy season.
Henrique said that the matter can be sorted out after having a discussion and taking the locals from Maimollem into confidence.
