MARGAO, JUNE 12
With the authorities turning a blind eye to the assembly of migrant labourers behind the Margao Municipal building, the Green Goa Foundation has served a seven-day deadline on the Margao Civic body to keep away the labourers off the road.
The NGO has threatened to move the court of law if the Civic body fails to initiate action within the deadline.
In a petition, the Foundation stated that a large group of migrant labourers assemble behind the Municipal building and occupy the road at the peak traffic hour.
Chairman of the Foundation, Raison Almeida contended that the presence of the labourers on the road causes considerable traffic obstruction, as the labourers solicit daily wage work from the passersby.
That’s not all. He said the labourers chew tobacco and spit on the road, thus causing nuisance.
Incidentally, the Margao Municipal council as well as the district traffic committee had recommended in the past to maintain the stretch entire road behind the Municipal building free from the labourers.
If fact, suggestion made to the Margao Civic body by the district authorities and the traffic department to allot the labourers a fixed place in the city have fallen on the deaf ears of the Civic officials.
