MARGAO: It’s 10 days now since the Margao Municipal Council kicked off the door-to-door waste collection project, but disposal of garbage at public places has not stopped till date, as the civic body struggles to implement the exercise in the city.
Garbage and waste continue to find its way at many a public places, raising questions over the efficacy of the ongoing door-to-door waste collection project. MMC officials were quick to defend garbage disposal in public places saying that the civic body is yet to bring the markets and commercial establishment under the door-to-door exercise.
Inquiries, however, revealed that the civic body is virtually struggling to keep the project going, hit by manpower constraints and bins distribution. A civic official conceded that only 70-80 per cent of the city households have been covered by the door-to-door scheme till date.
The civic body has not even distributed bins to the households in localities where the door-to-door waste collection has started around 10 days ago. This has affected segregation of waste at source, with the workers left with no option than to accept non- segregated waste from the households.
Herald inquiries have further revealed around 40 out of the 200 workers have stopped reporting for work, again affecting the programme. This has forced the municipal sanitary section to ask the Chief Officer Narayan Sawant to go for recruitment of workers. It is feared in the corridors of the civic body that the entire system may collapse for want of workers and leave the households disappointed if there’s no daily collection of the waste door-to-door.
