MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) standing committee, at a meeting on Thursday passed a resolution to hold the Holy Spirit fair at the SGPDA ground. The resolution will be forwarded to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). The MMC also briefly discussed the plans and other ideas for the fair.
The standing committee has also decided to put strictures on the sopo contractor not to collect any money over the prescribed amount as in the past, it was seen that vendors at the fair were charged extravagantly by the contractor. The committee also mentioned that bouncers were brought in to force the vendors to pay more money. The MMC will now be keeping a close eye on such activities.
It may be recalled that the MMC had held an important joint meeting with the MLAs of Margao and Fatorda to discuss the High Court order regarding the Holy Spirit feast fair. As the MMC will lose revenue of over Rs 18 lakh annually if the fair is cancelled, it was decided to follow the High Court order and hold the fair at the SGPDA ground.
The High Court order came after Green Goa Foundation had filed a petition against having the fair on the footpaths of the national highway. The order had listed several alternate locations for the fair, including the unused ring road, SGPDA ground and other areas.
