PANJIM: The Southwest monsoon has finally arrived in Goa on Tuesday, two days prior to the scheduled date, the Indian Meteorological department (IMD)’s Goa observatory announced.
Monsoon, which had reached Kerala on June 1, had advanced on Karnataka on Monday.
IMD Goa in-charge K V Singh said that the monsoons have already set in, in Goa from Tuesday, which is two days prior to the expected date of arrival, adding that rains would be normal in the state.
IMD had earlier predicted that SW monsoon would reach Goa by June 7, which is a expected date for onset of monsoon for state annually.
The State over the last two weeks has been under wrap of pre-monsoon showers. Goa received very few pre-monsoon showers, leaving the weather hot and humid.
Meanwhile, IMD has predicted cloudy sky and rainfall or thundershowers for the state. The minimum and maximum temperature for the day remained between 30.8 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius, respectively.
The earlier than normal arrival of monsoon has given cheer to people, especially the farming community. The paddy cultivation is expected to start in the state by the week-end.
Agriculture Director Satish Tendulkar stated that the farmers have already geared up for planting the paddy crop in the state. “We have made available seeds for paddy cultivation through various cooperative societies,” he informed adding cultivation can start by end of this week.
