Consequent to the food poisoning incident and the onset of monsoon, FDA has got cracking on street food carts, eating houses, fast food joints and kiosks. FDA Director Salim Veljee said they will check cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene and ensure that good quality water is being used.
He warned that penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Rules / Regulation 2011 would be imposed against defaulters for non-compliance. The provisions of the Act include that:

No food articles are exposed while on sale to the public; food articles are covered by appropriate means to avoid insects, flies, etc;
No cut fruits / vegetable are exposed in open condition for display for sale to the public;
Only packaged drinking water should be served to the public for drinking purposes, unless the eating houses / food vendors are equipped with proper water filter instruments which are being maintained and serviced on regular basis;
Street food vendors, fast food joints, kiosks should strictly serve food only in disposable plates, spoons and avoid the washing activities of their utensils in their premises, except in strict identified / designated area, fit for washing and all such washed waste should be properly discharged and not left in the open;
No waste should be discharged in open places except in closed bins / containers provided for the purpose.
