Sources said the incident took place at 4 pm and that the snake was small. Desai tried to rescue it as he had done with other snakes in the past. However, the snake coiled itself around his arm and bit him. Doctors confirmed that Desai died from the bite and that they were trying to ascertain the snake’s species.
Govind alias Sandesh Desai was posted at Sea Bird Karwar with the Navy and the snake bite incident is reported to have taken place at Khareband.
The news of Desai’s death sent shock-waves across Margao. Condolences poured in from all quarters since the evening.
