CANACONA: While the seat sharing formula between Congress and NCP was still being finalised, the NCP did a somersault in Canacona constituency as its four-month-old Canacona block resigned en mass to join the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party on Saturday.
It is believed that the NCP’s decision to easily give up its claim for the Canacona assembly seat in the pre-poll alliance with the Congress was the root cause of the revolt by the Canacona block NCP.
NCP Canacona Block President Sapnesh Dessai said, the Canacona block of NCP, having about 500 members and including the NCPs Canacona Mahila and Youth Blocks, resigned from the party on Saturday and joined the TMC party.
“State TMC Chief Dr Wilfred D’Souza has nominated to me to contest the forthcoming assembly elections from Canacona constituency,” Dessai told Herald.
It may be recalled that NCP, which literally had no representation in Canacona before October 2011, organized a large convention which was attended by Goa Desk in-charge Bharati Chawan and Revenue minister Jose Philip D’Souza, amongst other leaders.
The NCP Canacona Block was installed under the leadership Sapnesh Dessai, besides the formation of the Mahila and Youth blocks in mid-October last year.
