MARGAO: NGO Goenkar, that has been working to keep Canacona municipal area clean for the past four years, has threatened to launch an agitation to get necessary facilities at the Canacona Health Centre.
The NGO also announced its desire to extend its presence in other parts of the state.
Briefing media Goenkar spokesman Sandesh Telekar lamented that while even the Prime Minister was advocating involvement of individuals and NGOs in Swachh Bharat programme, a councillor from Canacona was objected to their help to the council.
According to him, Goenkar was interfering too much and therefore the council should keep us away, he said pointing out that for the past four years through contribution of their members and help of local people they have been working in Canacona to maintain cleanliness.
“It is due to our efforts that the municipal council could start the door-to-door garbage collection,” he said adding that in May 2016 they cleaned up the Dumanem garbage management site that had turned into a dump site like Sonsoddo and handed it over to the council.
However, it was back to square one by this summer and the exercise of baling the plastic that Goenkar had done was abandoned.
Now Goenkar has decided to spread its wings to the rest of the State and urged people to bring to their notice any black spot they notice. “We shall study the situation and accordingly work out a solution,” Goenkar Secretary Vikas Bhagat said.

Sandesh also lamented that every successive government promise to upgrade Canacona health centre, which was not being utilized properly and with the exception of a cardiologist no other specialist visited the centre.
