MARGAO: In yet another twist to the no-confidence motion tabled against Margao Municipal Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, the signatories to the motion on Wednesday withdrew the notice of the motion from the office of Director of Municipal Administration.
The withdrawal of the notice of no-confidence motion comes against the backdrop of the withdrawal of signatures from the notice by councillors Dayanand Deulkar and Bindiya Naik.
In a day of hectic developments in the office of DMA Elvis Gomes, councillor Bindiya Naik appeared before the DMA to testify that she had indeed signed on the letter withdrawing her name from the notice of no-confidence motion. Councillor Dayanand Deulkar did not turn up before the DMA, but filed an affidavit stating that he had signed the letter withdrawing his signature from the motion.
With the two signatories backing out from the motion, the opposition group led by councillor Sadanand Naik had no option than to withdraw the notice reportedly for want of sufficient numbers.
When contacted, Sadanand said that the motion was tabled against the Chairperson after both Dayanand Deulkar and Bindiya Naik agreed to sign the motion on their own. “It was only after the two councillors showed interest in dislodging the Chairperson, we had submitted the notice in the DMA’s office”, he said. Incidentally, former Chairperson Arthur D’Silva, who is believed to have made the counter move to scuttle the no-confidence motion, said that God was on their side to defeat the motion.
