Even after sending three requests to the Margao Municipality for 180 new signboards for traffic control, the MMC has failed to fulfill the request and pay any attention to the worsening of the traffic problems in Margao. Every passing day has become a challenge for the traffic police of Margao who are caught in the line of fire due to these basic deficiencies.
Now, the Margao Traffic Cell, which had inspected the entire city for the traffic problems and had sent a proposal suggesting 180 road signs all over Margao, is still waiting for the MMC to revert back to them. The Police Inspector of Traffic Cell of Margao, Mohan Gaude, said there has been no reply to the three reminders of the Police.
The Police had earlier done a survey of the traffic bottlenecks and the parking condition of the Margao town and subsequently decided on areas which need sign boards for parking or no parking. This very report was sent to the Margao Municipality for consideration. The traffic police in the meeting with MMC had discussed on the suggestions in presence of the Chief Officer of MMC Yashwant Tawde. “The MMC has been informed on the deteriorating traffic solution in Margao. But there is no receipt of sign boards from them till date,” said Mohan Gaude.
The Traffic Cell has also informed that they have been forced to utilise man power of the cell in areas where the sign boards can do the jobs. The traffic cell has to guard 8 spots in Margao areas which are near schools and other institutions.
The MMC Chief Officer, Yashwant Tawde, while speaking to Herald said, “The Traffic Cell has been putting up this proposal and reminding us for quite some time now. However, just two weeks back we finalised a party from Vasco for 50 boards.”
The Chief Officer has, however, given no time frame for the entire exercise to complete but has said that he will ask for expediting the entire process. “The party has agreed for 50 boards for now and has shown willingness to add some more too. The MMC will decide on this subsequently,” he said.
The Chief Officer has asked the contractor to expedite the process as there is an increase in traffic during the festive season.
Traffic Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabodh Shirvoikar said because of this delay of the MMC the Traffic cell has failed to erect the boards of no parking and others, resulting in traffic problems, jams, etc.
