PANJIM: The government has stood firm on its stance that it will not give grants to the 139 private schools teaching English at the primary level, citing that this was the condition on which they were granted permissions to open the institutions.
Parrikar, who was grilled on the issue by Opposition leader Pratapsing Rane Thursday, denied discriminating against these 139 institutions stating that they were given permissions to open on conditions that they would not ask for grants.
He refused to accept any arguments from the Opposition on his position, stating that it was not fair that these institutions should now be given relaxations after accepting the pre conditions before they were granted permissions.
He also refused to agree with Rane that any such school was getting grants from the government other than the institutions which had shifted to English medium at the primary level under the policy presently in force.
He also disclosed that as many as 68 new permissions have been granted to start schools in Konkani and Marathi medium this year.
