Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday assured the State Legislative Assembly that incidents like the recent arrest of Kerala-based nuns in Chhattisgarh will not be allowed to occur in Goa. Responding to concerns raised by Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, the Chief Minister cited the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Goa as a key safeguard.
“Bhivpachi Garaj Na (There is no need to fear),” Sawant said, reaffirming that Goa respects all communities and ensures equal protection under the law. He emphasized the State’s continued commitment to communal harmony and the protection of minority rights.
Alemao, however, warned of a disturbing pattern emerging in BJP-ruled states, where minorities are allegedly becoming targets of harassment through fake complaints, often with police complicity. He highlighted the growing threat of private policing and right-wing influence, urging the government to remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt Goa’s communal peace.
The exchange underscored rising national concerns over religious freedom, even as Goa projects itself as a model of coexistence and legal equality under the Uniform Civil Code.
