VASCO: Vasco Police are yet to identify the person who had abandoned the body of an infant in the waste bin on September 1, after 53 days of thorough investigation and search.

A source from the Vasco Police Station, on the condition of anonymity, informed that after the body was retrieved from the waste bin, the police, as part of their investigation, contacted the Child and Welfare Department. The police also collected details from the Anganwadi workers of any pregnant woman who had come to take nutrition doses advised by the government.
The source further said that police team also contacted gynaecologists from Vasco, including the maternity hospitals, municipality and neighbouring panchayats of Bogmalo and Chicalim and collected information of registration of any recent birth. But unfortunately, the police have failed to find any clue from cracking the case and tracing the person behind abandoning of the infant.
It may be recalled that on September 1, 2020 an infant’s body was found abandoned in the waste bin. The medical test revealed that it was COVID-19 negative. Histopathological examination report of tissues and clavicle for DNA profile were pending which will bring more clarity in this case, the source informed.
As per the autopsy report the age of the infant is established to be between 1 and 10 days. The cause of the death mentioned in the medical report “is believed to be due to opinion reserved pending histopathological examination report of tissues preserved”.
Further, the source said that the umbilical cord was attached to the body of the infant which clears the doubt of the infant being delivered in the hospital or in a medical facility.
“Chances are likely that the delivery of the infant must have been performed in a house,” says the police source.
Vasco Police have registered an offence against an unknown person under Section 318 of IPC.
