Oppn panch members of Velsao-Pale-Issorcim object to p’yat body meeting

Claim that the notice for the meeting is issued three days before the meeting, whereas Goa Panchayat Raj Act mandates a ‘seven days notice’

MARGAO:  Three opposition panch members of the Velsao-Pale-Issorcim village panchayat have written a letter to the Sarpanch and panchayat secretary demanding that the fortnightly meeting that has been convened for Friday, September 9, be cancelled.

The panchas, Jim D’Souza, Remedios Noronha and Tecia Barretto pointed out that they received the notice dated September 6, about the meeting only on September 7, Wednesday, which they said was in violation of the Goa  Panchayat Raj Act 1994. The panchas pointed out that as per Section 54 (3) of the Act, a ‘seven clear days notice must be given to the members for holding an ordinary meeting.

“We have also noticed that the notice requests the members to furnish the proposals if any five days before the meeting, which again is not viable since the time of the notice is very short,” the panchas added.

It may be recalled that there was a bitter exchange between the ruling group and opposition panch members after the elections.

Sources stated that the panchayat meeting has been postponed to September 19.
