CANACONA: Around 1200 people on Monday led a morcha to the Deputy Collector’s office at Chaudi, Canacona to protect their shacks and other structures at Agonda from being demolished.
According to Deputy Collector Kedar Naik the demolition was to be carried out on Monday since report had to be submitted on Tuesday to the higher authorities. But due to the morcha at the office of the Deputy Collector the demolition could not be carried out.
Local MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar assured the gathering that he has already spoken to the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar who further assured that their structures will not be demolished.
The deputy collector visited two sites at Palolem and saw owners clearing the same and waited till they removed the same. The deputy collector said, “We then moved to Agonda but couldn’t go ahead with the demolition following complaints by some residents on the illegal structures as people blocked our access”.
When contacted, Canacona PI said no untoward incident was reported.
Sources informed that around five “illegal” structures at Agonda were to be demolished on Monday but due to intervention of local MLA and group of shack owners the demolition drive could not be carried out.
Sarpanch Navnita Naik Gaonkar said “Over fifty percent of the structures at Agonda beach are illegal and due to this many illegal activities are taking place and I have sought immediate action from the concerned authorities in this regard.”
