PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday told the State legislative Assembly that directions would be issued to police stations to expedite the process of disposing of unclaimed vehicles which were involved in accidents or other crimes and which are lying at the various police stations, after getting the necessary court orders.
Parrikar assured the House that he would dispose of the vehicles within next six months. As per the reply tabled in the House, 165 vehicles, which include two and four-wheelers, are gathering dust at various police stations and other investigative institutions such as CID and ANC in the state. At some places the vehicles are lying since 2007.
The Home Minister was replying to a question tabled by former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who sought to know the steps the government intends to take to clear the unclaimed vehicles lying at police stations and bus stands, turning the places into junkyards.
Parrikar admitted the same and explained that the main reason for these vehicles piling up was that in most cases owners refuse to claim their vehicles once they retrieve their insurance money. And, once the chassis and engine numbers are erased, it is difficult to track the vehicle’s owner.
He said that notice would be served to police directing them to dispose the vehicles.
