PANJIM: Minutes after Goa Governor Dr Mridula Sinha raised concerns about the growing drug trade and prostitution, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the government is working out a robust mechanism to tackle these issues.
“What Governor pointed out is that these issues (drugs, prostitution) are evils in society and we have to get rid of it,” Parrikar told media persons on the sidelines of State function held to mark Republic Day.
“We are already working on that. We will work out a robust mechanism. How to track narcotics and how to deal with it, all these aspects would be clearly spelt out,” he added. The Chief Minister also said that the police are already cracking down on the narcotics trade and prostitution.
Speaking on garbage, Parrikar said the government will soon introduce fines for
littering in public. “I have moved a note to impose fines for those involved in dumping garbage in the open,” he said.
“We have already started fining those using banned plastic bags. In the last 20 days police have fined 1500 people,” he said adding that the system is slowing falling on track.
Endorsing the Governor’s announcement to make Goa garbage free by 2019, he said garbage is an issue that has to be solved by everybody and not just the government. “Government only helps solve the problem, everyone should think of it as his own issue and act,” he stated. “Government will introduce a collection and segregation system. But every individual has to be responsible,” he added.
