Pernem, Bardez and Bicholim farmers to get flood-relief today

PANJIM: The State government on Friday will disburse the compensation to the farmers of Pernem, Bardez and Bicholim, whose farms were damaged due to the floods. 
At 12 pm, at Pernem Society Hall, CM Sawant, Dy CM Kavlekar and Dy CM Manohar Ajgaonkar will distribute compensation to the farmers. Then at Deendayal hall, Bicholim , Sawant and  Kavlekar will distribute compensation to the farmers of Bicholim at 1.pm
The incessant rains that caused major flooding affected the livelihood of total 6,336 farmers across State, majority from North Goa. The total crop loss was to the tune of Rs 8.92 crore while almost 1900 hectare of cultivation has been destroyed. Kavlekar who is also the Quepem MLA said that as promised, the govt will distribute partial compensation to the flood affected farmers on Friday, just ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi festival. 
Kavlekar, who holds the portfolio of Agriculture, had surveyed various flood affected areas of Pernem, Bardez and Bicholim along with the officials of Agriculture Department. 
He added that the government is sympathetic towards the farming community, which is the backbone of Goa’s economy and social structure.
He recalled the assurance given to the farmers, especially those who are engaged in the cultivation of bananas that they will be given monetary support and compensation, to support them in their difficult times and in a time bound manner.
