MARGAO: The South Goa Planning and Development Authority may find itself in a tight spot over the maintenance of its mega market at Old Market and the wholesale fish market.
The High Court has granted liberty to a city-based petitioner to initiate appropriate legal action, including contempt proceedings against SGPDA Member Secretary Rajesh Naik and MMC Chief Officer for their gross negligence in maintaining the PDA markets.
Petitioner Savio Dias told Herald that he would soon initiate contempt proceedings against the SGPDA member secretary and MMC Chief Officer for their failure on the maintenance front as well as to check rampant encroachments in the two markets.
In his petition before the High Court, Dias maintained that the effluent treatment plant at the wholesale fish market was never commissioned. “The tank of the treatment plant is overflowing with sludge and waste of the wholesale fish market. Dirty water from the wholesale market flows into the paddy fields”, he stated in his petition.
He pointed out that the SGPDA markets are in a pathetic condition since their commissioning a decade ago despite him approaching the High Court on four occasions during the last 10 years.
It was pointed out that wastewater from the retail SGPDA market is being discharged in the open nullah adjoining the district and Sessions Court, Margao.
with the authorities turning a blind eye to the nuisance.
Incidentally, the SGPDA has entrusted the task of maintaining the SGPDA mega market at the Old Market of Green Goa Works ~ which has began the arduous task of putting the market in order.
