Police hold flag march in Margao

The police conducted a flag march and maintained a close vigil in the sensitive areas of Margao and neighbouring Rumdamol housing board on Thursday in view of the Allahabad high court verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute.
Though the day passed off peacefully without any incident, the police in the Commercial Capital are gearing up for bandobast on the occasion of the 21 day Lord Ganesh immersion. The police has sought additional reinforcements on Friday during the Ganesh immersion procession, beginning from the Swami Samarth Gad Temple at Rumdaol before culminating at the River Sal at Khareband after passing through the city.
While the police maintained a tight vigil in the market area of the city and at Rumdamol and Gogol housing Boards, life went on as usual without any problem.
The police conducted a flag march by armed personnel on Thursday noon to instill confidence in the citizens. Deployment of the police force began around 2 pm and completed well before the Allahabad high court pronounced the verdict.
DySP Umesh Gaonkar said the police dispersed a gathering of youth at an overseas recruiting office on the station road, who had come for job interviews as a precautionary measure and in view of section 144 of the Cr P C in force.
At Rumdamol housing board, PI Maina Curtorim police station, Sidhant Shirodkar patrolled the entire migrant inhabited housing board area. Motorists entering the housing board were stopped and checked by the police at the Maruti Temple area.
Though the police presence was seen in the housing board locality in strength, life, however, went on as normal.
DySP Gaonkar said that the police deployed around 200 policemen in both the sensitive areas of Margao, including the markets and Rumdamol housing board. Police pickets set up earlier in the evening continued till late this evening and were leaving nothing to chance.
