CALANGUTE: In the fourth such crackdown on prostitution rackets along the Calangute coast in the past few months, Calangute Police arrested a 32-year-old native of Andhra Pradesh and rescued eight dance girls at Calangute.
The raid was carried out by Calangute Police team led by PI Nilesh Rane along with a panch and NGO witnesses, following specific information about a sex trade at a resort in Tivai Vaddo, Calangute, between 8 pm and 11.45 pm on Monday.
Police arrested Umapati for his alleged involvement in the sex trade, while the eight girls were later sent at State Protective Home, Merces. The accused was taken on four days remand and police are looking out for the other accused. PI Nilesh Rane is investigating the case.
According to Calangute Police, a group of 28 men had checked in at the resort at Tivai Vaddo for a conference, while a separate group of women working as artiste-cum-dancers also checked-in as part of the conference.
Police said all the male members were farmers and pesticide dealers from Gangavati-Karnataka. The dance girls were hired by a person from Hyderabad for a stage performance. However, the girls were asked to perform closed door and were directed to mix up with the male group members. The girls were also asked to accompany and entertain the male members for an extra charge.
The resort management was, however, kept in the dark over the sex trade and was told to arrange for a dinner cocktail with a dance performance.
No girl was taken to room by the male members as they were busy dancing when the raid took place, Calangute Police said.
