MARGAO: The recent surge in road accidents across South Goa prompted Superintendent of Police Rahul Gupta, South Goa Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Probodh Shirvoikar and Margao Traffic Cell PI Sanjay Dalvi, to get out and onto the streets of Margao and Fatorda, to sensitise motorists about safe driving practices, on Saturday.
Scooter riders were encouraged to use helmets and were reminded of their responsibilities for better traffic management and regulation. Pamphlets highlighting the importance of helmets and seat belts were distributed to two-wheeler riders and others. The team also visited Gogol to inspect the functioning of a newly installed traffic signal. The senior policemen were seen handing out roses to two-wheeler riders, in a bid to convince them to ride safely.

Additionally, the Margao Traffic Cell and the Fatorda police team conducted late-evening checks for drunk driving using an alcometer.
Margao resident Sandeep Pednekar commented that unorganised traffic and poorly maintained roads are major causes of road accidents. He noted the lack of parking spaces, leading to traffic mismanagement, and suggested prioritising efforts to improve the traffic system.
It is noteworthy that Goa witnessed 982 accidents from January to April this year, resulting in 113 fatalities. In April alone, 34 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Goa.
