PONDA: With the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) elections scheduled in March –April 2018, politicians including Congress’ Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, PWD Minister and MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar and the BJP’s Ponda unit have started holding meetings to choose suitable candidates by forming independent panels to contest the election.
Since BJP and MGP are in ruling group, they are likely to contest the polls together by forming their panel. However, the decision to form an alliance or not will be taken by the top leaders of both the parties at later stage, informed BJP sources.
Congress MLA Ravi Naik will definitely try to win the election to get his hold on the council, and it is likely that the BJP-MGP will form alliance to contest against Naik’s candidates.
Last time the BJP and MGP had formed an alliance and had won 13 seats in the 14-member council with the BJP winning 7, MGP bagging 6 and Congress managing to win only one.
It is learnt that the Urban Development Department is planning to delimit the PMC wards next month. PMC sources said following the delimitation, PMC will now have 15 wards.
