Continuing its raids on illegal ripening of mangoes for the second day on Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorities raided outlets in Ponda and Mapusa and seized 11 tonnes of mangoes.
According to Food and Drug Administration Director Salim Veljee, the FDA officials sealed three godowns in Ponda, two in Upper Bazaar and one at Curti, and one in Mapusa.
“In Ponda, the FDA officials seized about 10 tonnes of mangoes and 60 gms of calcium carbide, while one tonne of mangoes and 400 gms of calcium carbide were seized at Mapusa,” informed Veljee. Veljee further informed that samples have been taken and sent for analysis.
“Three persons have been detained in Ponda for interrogation under the Food Adulteration Act,” he said.
He further said the raid which started in the morning continued till late in the evening. FDA Food Inspectors Flavia D’Souza, Abel Rodrigues, Iva Fernandes, Nelson Fernandes and Shailesh Shenvi conducted raids at Mapusa and Ponda.
