Pondaites urge govt to make best use of wasted water

PONDA: Witnessing the wastage of fresh underground water which is pumped out on daily basis into gutters while constructing several sewerage chambers for laying of pipeline network in the town, Ponda locals on Thursday demanded with the State government for proper management and use of underground water.

The locals said that if well planned then the water wasted can be used for the gardens, bagayats, cleaning of clothes or even can be provided to the builders, who require plenty of water for construction purpose.

“The government or the sewerage department officials should come out with proper planning and management of water for making its best use, considering the water shortage faced by the locals,” felt the Pondaites.

“If the water wastage continues Ponda springs and wells would run dry in future,” they claimed.

“The sewerage chambers constructed get refilled with water even though the workers repeatedly pump it out into gutters or nullahs,” they added.

Viraj Sapre, a local said that he is repeatedly raising this issue. He said almost 12 meters pits are dug. The sewerage chambers get refilled with water even though water is pumped out repeatedly.

“Since past few years, the work has been going on for laying of the sewerage pipeline and several chambers are constructed by digging in the middle of roads. I can’t imagine how much MLD water is wasted in the past two years,” he added.

Sapre said, “Sadly the government or the sewerage department which is located near the PWD Water Supply Division at Dag is seen repeatedly pumping out the water into gutters that too when Pondaites struggles to get water, gherao engineers due to shortage of water supply.”

He said that even he is not getting water on time and facing water shortage while on other hand is pained to see and concerned over lakhs of litres fresh underground water pumped out into gutters without thinking that it can be used for domestic, gardening, bagayats, washing and even for building construction purpose where many times treated water is used, which could be saved and supplied to the needy. In Curti, the migrant women wash their clothes in polluted nullah water. Even they can be supplied with this clean water.

Sapre cautioned that if in this way the water is released into gutters, the springs and wells in Ponda would run dry in future.
