Portal to map danger zones for women

PANJIM: At a time when the State is facing security issues for women, a portal started by a group of entrepreneurs over 18 months ago, in Goa, is documenting zones in their respective jurisdictions where women could be vulnerable.

The website’s main objective is to create awareness on street harassment and abuse, but the portal www.safecity.in also helps women to break their silence and narrate their personal experiences.
“The information is collated to showcase location based trends which is subsequently available and useful for individuals, local communities and local administration,” Managing Director Elsa Marie D’Silva told a press conference on Tuesday.
Since its launch on December 26, 2012 the team has collected over 2800 stories from over 50 cities in the country. Besides its presence on the social networking sites, the group will soon launch a misdial facility where people can leave missed call on 9015510510 and the staff will revert to record the story.
In Goa, the team claims to have initiated a direct link with Goa police. “The victim can make a complaint on the online format with her personal details. Though this will not be an official complaint to the police, we would share the inputs with the police during our meetings,” she said.
The group has assistance of institutional partner Kaydence Media Ventures through its flagship product GoaChronical.com. “Safecity is prevention before a cure is needed to the growing menace of sexual crimes against children and women. We plan to create awareness through road shows and seminars in different colleges, schools and offices,” KMV MD Savio Rodrigues said.
As on date, the portal has received a couple of complaints from women tourists. The portal will also highlight violence against children.
