Portion of ring road gives way at Margao, residents blame contractor for shoddy work

MARGAO: After Panjim, now roads in Margao have started to sink. On Thursday a huge portion of the ring road caved in at Comba-Margao with residents fretting and fuming and demanding strict action against the contractor responsible for the super mess.

A huge portion of the road caved in and posed a danger to motorists, including students who use this route on a regular basis.

Residents claim that the sinking of the ring road at several places is a yearly affair and squarely blamed it on the contractor involved in laying the sewage pipeline.

“The road was constructed haphazardly,” said Milagres Fernandes, a social worker from Fatorda.

“This road is being used by hundreds of motorists and more especially by parents to drop and pick their kids from schools. Sub-standard material has been used to construct the road and the contractor cannot be let off the leash,” alleged Fernandes.

Savio Coutinho said that such incidents are being reported due to the negligence from the part of the sewerage department.

“This proves that the works carried out are defective and public money wasted,” he alleged.

Several other citizens from Fatorda and Comba have also demanded strict action against those involved in sub-standard works and putting the life of the public in danger.
