BELGAUM: While the onion prices are on the decline since last week, prices of other vegetables too have come down.
With rise in the vegetable cultivation and higher yield, prices of vegetables in the wholesale vegetable market near the Belgaum Fort here have come down to its lowest in recent times. Prices of tomatoes, brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower and other staple vegetables are among those that have come down to the lowest in recent times. Compared to last month, prices of vegetables have come down by nearly 30 per cent.
According to wholesalers in Belgaum, this trend is expected to continue till April this year.
“Around this time of the year, apart from cultivating vegetables as per routine, farmers also cultivate vegetables in their sugarcane fields. It is due to this that huge quantity of vegetables is arriving from the hinterland adversely affecting prices,” stated Umesh Patil, secretary of Cantonment Wholesale Vegetable Market Association. “This trend is expected to continue at least till April,” he added.
Meanwhile, farmers in the district are agitated and are demanding a minimum assured prices for the vegetables as fall in prices is causing heavy losses to them. “It’s tough time for us as we are not even recovering the cost price of the cultivation of vegetables,” Omanna Tumari, a farmer told Herald.
