Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello, under the banner of ‘Residents of Mungul’ (ROM) gave the executive engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) Roads Division a three-day ultimatum to complete a host of works on the Mungul-Betalbatim road. The organisation has threatened to hold a ‘Rasta Roko Andolan’ if its demands are not met.
The Mungul-Betalbatim road is dangerously narrow and has deep cliffs on the sides. A Rs 1.45 Crore proposal, which included widening, tarring, laying pavers, and building gutters and retaining walls along the road was cleared, and work orders were issued in July 2014.
Rebello, who is also a resident of Mungul, told Herald, “The reason for the delay in completing these works is unknown, but the locals have been demanding the works for a long time.”
The locals have contributed land for the widening to remove bottlenecks, and now demand that the authorities complete the work
General Secretary of ROM Joao Dourado was one of the contributors. He recalled a horrifying accident wherein three women were flung into the fields. He added, “These kind of accident need to stop, and for that the road needs to be widened.”
