PANJIM: The PWD has sought details from the 189 panchayats on toilets and other sanitation related issues, officials said today.
The department also had an interaction with the panchayats as well written to them seeking details of resolutions taken by it. It also wants the panchayats to reconstitute the village, water and sanitation committees, by January 15.
‘We have sought details from the panchayats. We want to complete some work by the end of this financial year,’ chief Engineer J S Rego told media adding that some of the panchayats had already submitted the details.
The proposals will be placed bef]tary and proposals cleared.
The PWD has already received a couple of crores in grants.
Herald had reported that 53,003 households – 34,157 in rural and 18,846 in urban areas – in the state ‘defecate’ in the open according to the latest census.
Also the State has not built toilets either as household latrines, school toilets or even as Anganwadi toilets in 2012-13.
These figures are as per the achievement report by the states into the Online Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) of the Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC)/ Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) during the year 2012-13.
Also according to figures in submitted to parliament, only 72.60 per cent of Goa is covered as far as rural sanitation coverage goes.
