Six months have passed and donations in cash continue to pour in for the Canacona flood-affected people, as the latest to join the list of donors is Government College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Quepem.
Quepem College collected Rs 2.12 lakh in aid of the Canacona flood victims and a cheque was handed over to the Canacona Flood Relief Committee (CFRC) through Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at a function at Poinguinim on Wednesday.
CFRC President Sandeep Painguinkar, Government College, Quepem, Principal Bhaskar Nayak, Prashant Naik and Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Pranali Painguinkar were present on the occasion.
CFRC President Painguinkar informed that with the money donated by Quepem College, they will build a house to flood victim Anand Pagi.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said he would have a final sitting in Canacona Deputy Collector’s office next week to finalise some flood-affected counter claims, which erupted due to unspecified reasons.
According to sources, there have been widespread discontents among flood-affected claimants that they are not suitably compensated by the government.
The people who earlier filed claims on their flood affected houses partially, are now reportedly claiming full compensation, after the houses have totally collapsed in later months, informed sources.
According to sources, CFRC has so far completed 12 houses, while two are under construction, besides supplied materials in parts to another 40 houses at Rs 20 lakh. The total collection of CRFC is Rs 26 lakh.
Interestingly, many of the reported 93 flood-ravaged houses preferred to build houses themselves after claiming compensations from the government, as few NGO chipped-in constructing one each house.
