Quepem Deputy Collector Agnelo Fernandes has urged the people of Sanguem and Quepem talukas not to be disturbed with the verdict on Ayodhya, as the verdict by the High Court could be appealed before the Supreme Court.
A meeting of the Peace Committee and prominent citizens from Sanguem, Curchorem and Quepem was convened in the chamber of Deputy Collector, Quepem, on Thursday to discuss preventive measures and to avoid any incidents from taking place after the High Court verdict on Ayodhya issue is given.
The meeting was attended by a large number of people, mostly sarpanchas, panchayat members, chairpersons, general public and police officers.
Speaking at the meeting, Fernandes urged the people not to be disturbed after the judgement is pronounced as the verdict to be given by the High Court to be only one step in the judiciary.
“The party affected by the judgement could well file an appeal before the Supreme Court,” he said.
He urged the public to refrain from clashing in the name of God and that they should not openly react to the verdict, whether it is in their favour or against.
“It is the duty of everyone to contribute to the peace for India. Let us remain united and not provoke anyone,” claimed Fernandes.
Fernandes also gave strict directions to the police officers to avoid happening of any unforeseen eventualities within their jurisdiction after the judgement.
“If need be, take preventive measures against any person who tries to bring discord to the communal harmony,” added Fernandes.
Ashish Karmali expressed his feeling and the fallout of 1989 to 1991, where there was a lot of destruction and submitted that there can be out of court settlement between the communities.
Sanjay Dessai, Maruti Naik and Vassant Parwar also spoke at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, all the members unanimously decided to remain united at the hour and not to fall prey to any communal forces to destroy the unity of India.
