Quepem DySP to head Shristhal temple body

CANACONA: A heavy rush of Mahajans was witnessed on Sunday to elect the new committee of Shri Mallikarjun Dev Advat Sivasanadhisvan Mahapati at Shristhal, one of the richest temples in the State, with a police official emerging victorious to the top post at the elections.

CANACONA: A heavy rush of Mahajans was witnessed on Sunday to elect the new committee of Shri Mallikarjun Dev Advat Sivasanadhisvan Mahapati at Shristhal, one of the richest temples in the State, with a police official emerging victorious to the top post at the elections.
When the voting began on Sunday morning, a large number of Mahajans assembled in the temple hall and were jostling each other to either file their nominations for the different posts or to obtain voting credentials.
When results were finally declared late Sunday evening, Quepem DySP Mahesh Naik Gaonkar, who incidentally is a Mahajan of the Shri Mallikarjun temple, Shristhal-Canacona defeated Arvind Dessai in a straight fight to the post of president.
Retired headmaster Shantaji Naik Gaonkar got elected as secretary, while Kusta P Naik Gaonkar and Babuso Naik Gaonkar were elected as treasurer and attorney respectively.
Earlier, the posts of vice-president (Nandeep Bhagat), asst secretary (Dayanand B Dessai) and asst treasurer (Nitin B Dessai) were elected unopposed.
postponed: Elections to the committee of Shri Mallikarjun Devasthan at Gaondongrim was forced to be postponed to an unspecified date, after the voters list went missing.
According to reports, preparations were made to hold elections to the different posts when the eligible list of voters could not be traced. Hence, elections have been postponed till a new list of eligible voters is prepared.
