MARGAO: Raia villagers while expressing concern over availability of narcotics in the village also resolved to ask the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation to accept garbage from Raia at Sonsoddo once they start managing that site.
At the gram sabha held on Sunday, the villagers expressed total disgust with the police over their failure to curb on the drug trade in the village. The villagers lamented that while earlier drugs could be purchased only in urban areas at present they are freely available in the village too.
They pointed out that police were informed about the people who are trading in drugs in the village and also told about the various places where narcotics are available in Raia. “However, the police failed to even raid one place,” they said.
The villagers also asked the panchayat to write to the Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo to allow Raia garbage to be handed over at Sonsoddo once the Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation takes over the management of Sonsoddo.
The villagers also asked the panchayat to be prepared to defend itself in the eventuality the police go to court as the panchayat had stopped the road widening of the village road without taking any permission from the relevant authorities that the police had undertaken on the road leading to the place where their colony is being set up.
Sarpanch Esmeraldo Gomes had good control over the gram sabha proceedings today and conducted the meeting very well not allowing anyone to raise irrelevant matters and getting most speakers to be precise and brief.
