PORVORIM: Legislators cutting across party lines stood unanimously in connection with their demand that the ‘no detention’ policy is reviewed, in view of the large number of students failing in the ninth standard.
Speaking during the Demands for Grants on Education, Congress MLA Pratapsingh Rane demanded that govt reviews the policy in the interest of the future of the students. “The No Detention Policy needs to be reviewed seriously, and it needs to be done by the educationists. The students should just not be pushed up to 8th standard,” he said.
He was supported by BJP MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar who sought called on the govt to look into the dropout rates across several schools. He also claimed that the No Detention Policy is discouraging academically oriented students.
BJP MLA Pandurang Madkaikar also slammed the deteriorating level of education while stating that the No Detention Policy has proved to be a bane. “We see students passing till Class VIII but they fail in the next class. The policy is spoiling the children. They are avoiding studying and missing out on many things in terms of gaining knowledge. The government should look at it,” he said.
MGP MLA Sudin Dhavalikar also supported the members of the House stating, “Most of them who fail are in English, Mathematics and Science. The government should think over it (policy) as well as increasing drop outs.”
Couple of years back, a majority of the MLAs had urged the then CM (late) Manohar Parrikar to re-introduce the pass-fail system in the school education system in the State and to scrap the existing no-detention policy. However, a decision is still pending.
